Beethoven's Fifth Symphony

We begin with Rautavaara’s immersive Cantus Arcticus, which integrates field recordings of birds from northern Finland and the Arctic Circle directly into the orchestral texture. Rather than the orchestra mimicking nature, you will hear the musicians providing a lush, atmospheric backdrop to the literal sounds of the wild. This is followed by the British premiere of Joan Tower’s A New Day, a work designed to showcase the expressive and technical range of the solo cello. The evening concludes with the architectural precision of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. While the famous four-note opening motif dominates the first movement, listen for how this rhythmic cell undergoes constant transformation throughout the work. The music eventually moves from a tense C minor into a triumphant C major finale, marked by the addition of trombones and a piccolo to broaden the sonic landscape. The progression creates a clear narrative arc from agitation to a sense of ultimate resolution.

The Hallé returns to its home stage under the direction of conductor Kristiina Poska. As one of the United Kingdom’s longest-established symphonic ensembles, the orchestra is noted for its clarity and its deep connection to the musical heritage of Manchester. They are joined by cellist Alban Gerhardt, a performer recognised for his intense musicality and commitment to expanding the cello repertoire through new commissions. Poska is known for her precise leadership, bringing a fresh perspective to both established nineteenth-century masterpieces and the complex requirements of contemporary orchestral writing.
