This work famously took the composer over a decade to complete as he grappled with the legacy of his predecessors. It begins with a relentless, pounding rhythm in the percussion and culminates in a broad, uplifting finale. The symphony is known for its rich orchestration and a celebrated melody in the final movement that feels both familiar and hard-won.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to its regular home in Reading, bringing the versatile and polished sound for which they are recognised globally. They are led by conductor Kristian Sallinen, who guides the ensemble through this cornerstone German repertoire. Joining them as soloist is Katherine Lacy, whose expertise on the clarinet is central to the Mozart concerto.
