The Maiden of Venice

We are presented with a reimagining of a nineteenth-century classic, where the melodic traditions of Ludwig Minkus are reinvigorated through Carlos Acosta’s modern choreographic lens. You will hear a score that was originally written to support the athletic demands of classical dancers, characterised by rhythmic clarity and broad, tuneful sweeps that suit a grand setting. The evening is shaped into a substantial three-act structure, involving the full ensemble in large-scale scenes and solo variations. Listen for how the music transitions from celebratory folk-infused melodies to more delicate, intimate passages that highlight the technical precision of the principal dancer. The production set and costume designs by Anna Fleischle ground these musical moments in a specific visual atmosphere, aiming to create a cohesive bridge between the historical score and the physical energy of the new choreography. Birmingham Royal Ballet is one of the United Kingdom’s major touring companies, renowned for maintaining a high standard of classical technique while commissioning new productions. Based in the Midlands, they are known for their expansive repertoire that spans the history of the form. For this performance, Yu Kurihara takes the central title role, supported by the full company.
